WHO WE ARE

The Office of the Achí Women is a branch of the Rabinal Legal Aid Clinic dedicated to promoting and defending the rights of women. It was created in 2006 due to a realization that a large number of the cases requiring legal attention were women who had been mistreated, abused, or abandoned by their husbands, who were not receiving support for their children, or who were displaced from their land.

MISSION

By providing accompaniment and support in cases of child support petitions, domestic violence, and other court cases involving women, we ensure that women’s rights are respected by judicial institutions.

We also facilitate workshops with community leaders, women’s organizations, and with secondary school students to provide a stronger understanding of human rights and the rights of women.

OBJECTIVES

To promote women's rights and gender awareness at the community level, in primary and secondary schools, and within public judicial institutions.

To promote women's political participation in the community and the municipality.

To provide support and assistance for women who are victims of family violence as they navigate the legal process, psychological support and shelter while they decide on their next steps, and skill development and training so that they can achieve economic independence.
